What moves a quote up or down

  • Area, length and height of the material.
  • Friable versus non-friable (bonded) material.
  • Access, scaffolding and distance to the waste facility.
  • Condition of the material: broken sheets cost more to handle.
  • Whether testing, clearance or replacement work is added.

Safety and regulations that affect price

In Western Australia a Class A licence covers every type of asbestos, friable material included, while a Class B licence covers non-friable (bonded) material only. Bonded work over 10 m² needs a licensed removalist. The current rules sit on the WorkSafe WA asbestos licences page.

Householders may remove up to 10 m² of non-friable asbestos under the household exemption. That is a legal threshold, not a recommendation to do it yourself, and it never applies to friable material. The 10 m² counts the whole project, so a job cannot be split into smaller pieces to stay under it.

Class A work also needs an independent licensed assessor to carry out air monitoring and the clearance inspection. Read WorkSafe WA guidance on asbestos removal and disposal before you commit to any plan.

A licensed removalist adds the controls the law requires, which is why a legitimate quote costs more than an unlicensed one. Check the licence class on the WorkSafe WA asbestos licences page.

How to compare quotes properly

  1. 1Ask for the licence class held by the removalist.
  2. 2Confirm wrapping, transport and disposal are included.
  3. 3Check whether testing or clearance is priced separately.
  4. 4Ask for the timeframe and whether a tip docket is provided.
  5. 5Compare scope line by line, not only the total.
